One of the worst volcano explosions the last million years on earth-The Burned Island
Tradition-how people lived in caves to protect from earthquakes and bad weather. The only thing the land produced was the small tomatos, fava, figs, grapes (wine) and herbs. Transportation was made with donkeys. Trading with surrounding islands was always a big help for the locals.
How to explore the island and things to do..
An atv experience is very common but also dangerous because of the traffic on the island. A vehicle is always necessary to explore a 45 klm island within few days.. but whats more than visiting the traditional settlements of Santorini, checking the nightlife and the beaches?
Loving hiking (not recommended during July, August) there are many beautiful hikes one could take, either in Megalochori caldera hike, or Imerovigli to Oia, either from Pyrgos to Prophet Elias monastery. Another lovely hike is from Perissa to Ancient Thira city (900 BC), stunning views and if you are lucky you may find thym, oregon and caper on your way (early season around May, June). Tip:
When beeing in Ancient Thira ask a local how to het to the cave with the running water “Zoodocho pigi”, beautiful scenery and nice stop to drink some fresh running water and relax at the patio of the cave & the church.
Beautiful secret places to explore are in Vothonas “Panagia Sergena”, in Emporio Agios Vasilis area there are ruins and caves from the Pirate Barbarosa times, the traditional settlement of Emporio is lovely and a walk at the windills is a must too. Vlychada beach and the traditional tavernas are places that one should’nt miss. Finikia village is very sweet with nice cave restaurants.
A cycle from Perissa to Vlychada is very nice and easy, a horseriding tour in Vlychada till the beach is a beautiful experience too. For those who like scuba diving, they say that Santorini is a must, where one could visit lava caves, wrecks, and you name it, especially in the area of the caldera (which was created after the volcanic explosion).
Dont forget to visit the island’s wineries, as a wine lover and after having tasted quite many different wines from the world and from Greece i would say that the wine of Santorini is very unique, different varieties can cover all tastes and i have to admit that i find its wines, on my top list of all wines tasted. If you are wine lovers remember drinking Thalassitis white wine, Aidani white wine, Asyrtiko white dry ehite wine, Mavrotragano deep red wine, Vinsanto and lots more..
Last but not least, there are different types of boat tours around Santorini and the volcano, as an more alternative person i would prefer either a fishing tour or renting a small boat and go around.
